THREAD COUNT (TC)

Thread count refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric, combining both vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) threads. It’s an important metric for assessing the quality and feel of cotton bedding linen.

1. Understanding Thread Count

  • Basic Definition: Thread count is calculated by adding the number of horizontal threads to the number of vertical threads in a square inch of fabric.
  • “Thread count refers to the number of vertical and horizontal threads in one square inch”. For example, if you have 100 threads woven horizontally and 100 threads vertically, the total thread count is 200. Usually, this is used when talking about sheets, which become softer as the thread count increases

2. Importance:

  • A higher thread count is often associated with softer and more durable fabric, although this is not the only factor influencing quality.
  • Common thread counts for bedding linen range from 200 to 800

B. GRAMS PER SQUARE METRE (GSM)

1. Understanding GSM

GSM stands for grams per square metre and is used to measure the weight of a fabric. When it comes to towels, GSM can help to gauge their quality. Typically, a low-GSM towel is light and thin, but towels with a higher GSM are thicker, softer and more absorbent.

2. What is the best GSM?

Choosing a towel with the right GSM depends largely on what it’s needed for. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. For example, towels that weigh 400 GSM or less may be too lightweight for bathing, but could be perfect for the gym or trips to the beach. They’re also quicker and cheaper to launder as they take less time to dry. If you’re looking for a guest towel then you should choose a GSM of 400 or higher. For everyday bathing, the GSM in bath towels should be 500+ to make sure they’re soft and absorbent.

So, when buying new towels, consider what you’ll be using them for. That way you’ll get the most out of your investment.
